We explore why native populations oppose or support immigration, testing various theories and uncovering new insights through original surveys and experimental research. These insights contribute to the broader understanding of how cultural, economic, and sociotropic concerns shape opinions on immigration.
Hainmueller and Hiscox (2010): This research investigates how attitudes toward immigration vary based on the skill level of migrants, testing economic theories of attitude formation.
Hainmueller and Hopkins (2015): This research examines how attitudes toward immigration vary based on migrants’ attributes, testing general theories of attitude formation and exploring consensus on immigration attitudes across voter subgroups.
